The Brief
You might not be behind. You might just be unreadable.
Feeling behind after years at one company? Sort what job posts ask for into knowledge, experience and evidence gaps, then check the evidence gap in your CV with the Free ATS CV scan.
You've been at the same company for a few years. You open a job description for the level you already hold, and a small question shows up: would I get hired for this today?
That feeling is vague, and vague feelings make people collect courses. A new framework, a system design book, some coding problems every night. Weeks go by and the feeling stays.
Here's the fix: turn the feeling into a list.
Take ten job descriptions for roles you would apply to tomorrow. Ignore anything that appears in only one of them. For every requirement that repeats, write one line:
I've done this and can explain it. I understand it, but I haven't owned it. I need to learn it.
Each answer points to a different gap, and each gap needs different work.
Evidence. You've done the work, but nobody outside your team can see it. Most experienced engineers miss this one, and it's the cheapest to fix. Experience. You know it, but you haven't made the decisions or lived through the failures. More reading won't fix this. A small project will, or asking for that kind of work at your current job. Knowledge. You need to learn the concept. Reading and practice help here.
From the hiring side, the evidence gap is the one I see most. Strong engineers with years of real decisions behind them, and a CV that lists tasks instead of what changed because of their work. The interviewer can't see what your manager has watched you do for five years.
You can check your own evidence gap in about a minute. Upload your CV to my Free ATS CV scan and it scores it across seven areas, including how much of your impact a reader can see. It tells you which area is costing you the most, so you know what to fix before you study anything else. Your CV text is not stored.
