Stage 2 · Negotiate

Leverage: offer call prep kit for software Engineers

Offer call prep for software engineers: the negotiation handbook, the scripts and the numbers, before the most expensive conversation in your search.

About the book

Most engineers do not lose money because they are bad negotiators. They lose it because the recruiter call starts before they have a number and a plan.

Leverage helps you decide what the offer is worth, what to ask for and what exact language to use.

It covers base, equity, sign-on, level, competing offers and the moments where saying less is stronger than filling the silence.

What you get

  • The handbook: 27 chapters with every claim labelled by confidence, a 30-minute plan and a one-page checklist
  • A toolkit spreadsheet: offer teardown, total compensation, vesting, ask builder, walk-away and counter plan
  • A script pack with regional tone variants and email templates
  • A market research checklist and an emergency offer call playbook
  • A source appendix: claim, source, access date, confidence and limitation

What they say, what they mean

They ask what you currently make

"I'd rather focus on the value I'd bring and the market rate for this role at this level. What range do you have approved?"

The most expensive sentence in your career is "I'm currently making..." Never finish it.

Reading recruiter language

"This is a strong, competitive offer." There is room, and they expect a counter.

"This is the top of the band." For base, maybe. For equity and sign-on, usually not.

"We need an answer by tomorrow." A pressure tactic more often than a real deadline.

"What would it take to get you to yes?" They are ready to move. Name a specific number.

"Let me see what I can do." Good sign. Hold your number, do not pre-negotiate against yourself.

Interpretive, from recruiter and candidate reports. Read as tendencies, not rules. Low confidence.

What readers say

  • “I honestly thought the Leverage book would be a nice bonus and that the CV audit already covered everything I needed. I was wrong. This is a completely different level. It's not the kind of thing you'll find on Amazon or in a typical career book. It feels like it's built from years of real experience and lessons learned the hard way. The negotiation insights alone are next level. Leverage level 99+. Highly recommended.”
